Recovery

The more you exercise, the more intensity you add to your routines, the more time you spend in extreme physical activity, the more the need for you to stretch and relax your muscles. This basic fact alludes most. The professionals know this of course; that's why they are professionals. It’s so simple, just like maintaining a good diet, but so hard for most to do. For some reason we believe the shortest route is straight through the brick wall, not over it. Most don’t believe the time allocated to help the body recover properly is time well spent.

The side effects of improper recovery are severe: cramps, injury, torn muscles, no muscle growth and fatigue. Fortunately the solution is simple.

Stretching is essential. For every two minutes you exercise you should stretch for one minute. During a heavy brutal routine you should stop midway and stretch. Exercise causes your muscles to contract; stretching pulls them out. Anyone engaging in serious exercise needs to stretch often and plenty.

If you don’t like to stretch because you lack the discipline or expertise, a Yoga practice is just for you. If you supplement your exercise routine with a regular practice three time a week your body will reward you. There’s a reason I have a Yoga group on this page.

If Yoga is just not your thing incorporate a regular stretching routine into your exercise routine. Remember, the harder you work out, the more you must stretch and recover.

Adequate recovery time is key. Sleep is required, the more the better. This can be difficult if you have an active family life with dependents. So here’s a cheat: take hot Epsom salt baths. The magnesium is just what your body needs. Add two pounds of Epsom salt and one pound of baking soda to a tub of hot water and soak for at least 30 minutes; an hour is perfect. Be sure to submerge your entire body under water. Take a soap shower afterwards to wash the salt from your body. Do this several times a week, especially after a hard work out.

If you really want to be extreme use half pound of powdered sea kelp instead. The kelp has all three salts: potassium, magnesium and sodium. This bath will relax your soar aching muscles and cut your body’s recovery time in half.

Any gym rat will acknowledge diet and good form as tantamount to success. So why disregard the need to help the body recover?
